What to expect from a core needle breast biopsy

2 min read
Prior to the procedure you will be asked to sign a consent form for the procedure. The consent form will list any possible complications and risks of doing the procedure.
Under imaging guidance the area around the lesion will be injected with lidocaine. Once numb, the core biopsy needle will be inserted into the breast and into the target lesion.
Samples will be taken and then sent to a pathologist for assessment. It may take up to several days to get the final report.
Typically, a small marking clip will be placed at the biopsy site. The wound will be closed with steri-strips. You can take a shower after 24 hours.

Swelling, bruising, and some bleeding can be normal. Use an ice pack over the area for the first 24 hours. Wear a bra when you sleep. Tylenol and/or ibuprofen can be used for pain if needed.
Call your doctor if you have any concerns after having a biopsy. If you do not get a call from your doctors office within a few days of having the biopsy call them to ask about your results.
