Acid reflux is a common cause of heartburn
Symptoms typically include bloating, pain in the upper abdomen and lower chest, hiccups, nausea and even throat discomfort.
The lower part of the esophagus has a band of muscles which acts as a one-way valve for food. In certain cases this muscle weekend causing the acid in the stomach to reflux back into the esophagus leading to symptoms.

In certain situations, losing weight, eating smaller meals, reducing alcohol intake and avoiding Fried may help reduce the occurrence.
Over the counter medications including antacids like Tums or H2 blockers like Pepcid AC are also treatment options
Often times the diagnosis is clinical however in certain cases an endoscopy may be necessary
