Mastectomy versus lumpectomy

1 min read
A mastectomy is the removal of most of the breast tissue. There are different types of mastectomies.
Mastectomies can be done with or without immediate reconstruction. The mastectomy is performed by the breast surgeon and the reconstruction is performed by a plastic surgeon.
A lumpectomy is the removal of the cancer with an adequate margin. With this type of surgery you keep your breast. There are different types of lumpectomies.
If you are offered a lumpectomy then the recommendation is to follow this with radiation. This helps decrease the chances of the cancer coming back.
In most cases, a mastectomy has the same survival rate and local recurrence rate as a lumpectomy with radiation.
Talk with your doctor about both options to decide which is best for you.
